To Meet Your VISUAL Needs
Welcome to Abraham Eye, your premier ophthalmologist in Valencia, California. Our experienced eye doctor and surgeon is dedicated to providing the highest quality eye care services, with a focus on corneal surgery.
Corneal surgery is a complex procedure that requires the skill and expertise of an experienced ophthalmologist. At Abraham Eye, our ophthalmologist specializes in a range of corneal surgeries, including PKP, DSEK, and DMEK. We use the latest technology and techniques to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.
- PKP (Penetrating Keratoplasty) is a type of corneal transplant that involves replacing the entire thickness of the cornea with donor tissue. During PKP, a circular section of the patient’s cornea is removed and replaced with a similarly sized section of donor tissue. PKP is a relatively complex procedure that requires multiple sutures to hold the new tissue in place and can take several weeks to fully heal. PKP is typically reserved for patients with advanced corneal disease, such as severe corneal scarring or degenerative conditions that affect multiple layers of the cornea.
- DSEK (Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty) involves transplanting a thin layer of donor tissue that includes the innermost layer of the cornea (called the endothelium) as well as a small amount of the stroma (the thicker middle layer of the cornea). The donor tissue is prepared in a way that allows it to be inserted into the eye through a small incision and unfolded into place. DSEK is a relatively quick and straightforward procedure with a high success rate, and it typically results in rapid visual improvement for the patient.
- DMEK (Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) involves transplanting an even thinner layer of donor tissue that includes only the endothelium. This tissue is more delicate and difficult to handle, so the procedure is more complex and time-consuming than DSEK. However, DMEK has the advantage of being able to provide better visual outcomes and faster recovery times than DSEK, particularly in patients with very advanced corneal disease.
During your initial consultation, we’ll perform a comprehensive evaluation of your cornea and discuss your goals and concerns. We’ll recommend the most appropriate treatment plan for you, which may include one of these corneal surgeries. Our advanced diagnostic tools and state-of-the-art equipment allow us to provide the most accurate and precise results for each of our patients.
Corneal surgery is typically completed in less than two hours and is performed on an outpatient basis. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure, and they are able to return to normal activities within a few days. We’ll provide you with detailed post-operative instructions and schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure the best possible outcome.
